Motto

上善若水 (Jōzen Nyosui): This translates to "Supreme good is like water" or "The highest excellence is like (that of) water." It's a fundamental concept from Taoism, particularly the Tao Te Ching, suggesting that the ideal state of being or character is like water: it benefits all things without contention, occupies low places that others disdain, and adapts to any form.


竹影掃階塵不動 月穿潭底水無痕 (Chikuei sōkai jin fudō, Getsu sentantei mizu nashiato): This is a couplet, often translated as:
"Bamboo shadows sweep the stairs, but no dust is stirred;
Moonlight penetrates the bottom of the pool, but leaves no trace on the water."

This poetic expression, often found in Zen Buddhist contexts, illustrates the concept of non-attachment and the illusory nature of phenomena. It speaks to the idea that outward appearances and actions may occur, but they don't necessarily leave a permanent mark or disturb one's inner peace or fundamental reality.

This book is the autobiography of Tadao Kashio, the founder of Casio Computer Co., Ltd. It chronicles his turbulent life, with a particular focus on his collaborative relationship with his four brothers (Tadao, Toshio, Kazuo, and Yukio). The narrative details their continuous, often audacious, challenges and the struggles and passion involved in creating groundbreaking products like calculators and G-SHOCK watches. The book vividly describes how each brother's role complemented the others and how their mutual trust and support led to the establishment of a global company. Tsuneichi Nishioka, "The Weight of Oral Tradition: Master Carpenter Tsuneichi Nishioka" (『宮大工棟梁?西岡常一「口伝」の重み』)
This volume is a collection of sayings from Tsuneichi Nishioka, renowned as the last master carpenter of Horyuji Temple. He inherited and passed down traditional architectural techniques and a deep reverence for nature through "oral tradition," emphasizing the importance of "conversing with wood" and adhering to the laws of nature. Nishioka dedicated his life to the restoration of Horyuji Temple, and his words offer profound insights into how to approach work with a thousand-year perspective, the philosophy of a true craftsman, and living in harmony with nature.
